Variation and Uncertainty in Design Variables of Flexible Pavement: Investigation of Performance and Economic Impacts

This study quantified the variation and uncertainty in design variables and evaluated their impacts on the performance of flexible pavement. Four significant design variables were considered, and the impacts of these variables on pavement design were determined by varying them over a realistic range. A sensitivity study revealed that air voids of asphalt mixture had the highest impact while California Bearing Ratio (CBR) of subgrade had the lowest influence on pavement performance. When the thickness of the granular layer was reduced by 10 and 20%, the cost of construction dropped by 2.9% and 5.8%, respectively.
