Case Study on Damage of Cement Concrete Bridge Deck Pavement: Insight into Efflorescence

This study conducts an in-depth investigation into the problem of efflorescence in the form of blocks and strips appearing on the cement concrete bridge deck pavement. The efflorescence mechanism is revealed through on-site survey, embedded sensors, ground penetrating radar, external temperature, humidity and air pressure monitoring and drill core sampling. The results show that disease problems in bridge deck pavements are actually caused by efflorescence rather than traditional grouting problems. The source of the efflorescence substance is the cement concrete leveling layer, whose main chemical component is calcium carbonate compound. The improper milling of the bridge deck screed, inadequate quality control during gravel seal construction, and interlayer water seepage all contribute to the development of efflorescence. Furthermore, significant temperature fluctuations and heavy rainfall accelerate the process by causing calcium carbonate compounds in the screed to be carried by water and seep out of the asphalt surface layer. The research findings can provide theoretical foundation and technical guidance for the effective prevention and control of efflorescence in cement concrete bridge deck pavements.
