Assessing the Effect of Aging Periods on the Performance of Hot Mix Asphalt

A comprehensive evaluation of the effect of different aging periods 0, 5, 10, 20, 30, 45, 60, 80, 100 and 120 h (at 85 °C) on the performance of hot mix asphalt is done in the present study. This approach helps understand the performance evolution with time and identify the aging sensitive parameter of the asphalt mix. Marshall stability, dynamic creep, indirect tensile asphalt cracking (IDEAL-CT) test, indirect tensile strength test and resilient modulus test were conducted at all ageing periods. Marshall stability values were insensitive to aging levels of the asphalt mix. Rutting resistance (in terms of permanent strain) increased with aging time and mixes tend to have high recoverable and less irrecoverable strains. Cracking tolerance index (CTindex) decreased with aging due to the reduction in flexibility (asphalt flexibility ratio) and simultaneous increase in stiffness (high peak loads). Combined effect of higher tensile loads and lower (recoverable) strains led to greater resilient modulus values. Although the tensile strength ratio (moisture resistance) was not as sensitive as other performance parameters to aging time, values decreased linearly with time. The effect of aging was mainly observed beyond 45 h. Statistical analysis and aging index indicated that CTindex is highly sensitive to aging followed by permanent strain and resilient modulus. The present AASHTO R30 aging protocol is found to be adequate in altering the performance of asphalt mixes.
