Characteristics and Applications of Basic Oxygen Furnace Slag as a Sustainable Construction Material—A Review

Slag is considered as a byproduct in the steel industry. It is becoming a challenge for steel makers to find possible uses for and disposal of the slag. Research in many areas, including innovative technologies, has been implemented to find the potential uses of slag in the construction industries, metal recovery, environmental remedial applications, etc. This article reviews the physical and chemical characteristics of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag and the implementation of these properties as a sustainable material in the construction industry. The applications of the BOF slag presented herewith range from road filling material to cement binder, ceramics, mortar, and bricks. The use of BOF slag in various fields as a construction material is significantly affected by its chemical composition and mineralogy. The presence of free oxides, like CaO and MgO, causes volume instability during its exposure to weather conditions and limits its use. However, research is being done to reduce the amount of free oxides in the BOF slag and make it suitable for wide applications. This article will be helpful for researchers working in the field of construction, waste management, and recycling.
