Evaluation of Various Treatment Methods for Enhancing the Recycled Aggregate Concrete

Today, there is a significant increase in the production of construction and demolition waste, which has serious negative effects on the environment as well as the economy. To combat this, recycled coarse aggregate from demolished concrete was extracted and used in the production of new concrete. Concrete's overall performance is decreased by using recycled coarse aggregate that has not been treated. As a result, the recycled coarse aggregate is mechanically scrubbed in a Los Angles abrasion machine, and the old mortar that had been adhered to the aggregate surface was removed using two acids, sulphuric acid & hydrochloric acid. Finally, it was concluded that the replacement of untreated recycled coarse aggregate significantly reduces the durability properties of concrete. The untreated recycled aggregate concrete, the rate of water absorption is 5.62%, which is more than controlled concrete 3.28%. After surface treatment the rate of water absorption was declined due to removal of old adhered mortar. In drying test, the rate of weight loss for untreated recycled aggregate concrete is 5.88% which is more than controlled concrete 2.35%, after surface treatment the weight loss are controlled. The results of this study reveal that various types of treated recycled aggregate concrete produce better results. Particularly, the mechanically scrubbing (MS) treatment recovered more than the other methods. But the outcomes don't exceed the conventional concrete.
