摘要

Environmental and health concerns have been increasing in the road construction field. The researchers are concerned with environmentally friendly, construction technologies sustainability; and asphalt mixture durability is taking on added significance. Durability is relevant to how the pavement mixtures react over time to the influence of water and temperature. Trials are used in the current practice of designing asphalt paving mixtures to achieve a balanced design among several desirable mix properties. These properties include stability, flexibility, fracture or tensile strength as well as fatigue, skid, and moisture damage resistance. This study presents a comprehensive guideline for the factors affecting the durability of asphalt pavement, as well as indicators, laboratory tests, and various techniques for improving durability. The objective state of the paper is to review the understanding of relevant parameters and provide how to increase durability. The evaluation process of durability consists of two parts: various laboratory tests and investigations of advanced techniques used to evaluate the durability of asphalt mixtures. Next, study the moisture susceptibility and its effect on the durability of asphalt mixtures. The moisture damage decreases the pavement durability because it reduces the bond between asphalt aggregate constituents fails in the presence of water interacting at the interface, resulting in the stripping of binder from the aggregate surface and cohesive failure within the asphalt binder. After that, study the evaluation and selection of the materials additives used to increase the durability. The durability criterion’s key performance indicators are discussed. These efforts can improve the field assessment of durability that appears during the design life of asphalt pavement and reduce the gap between field and laboratory investigations.
