Spatio-temporal trend analysis of pollutant emissions from crop residue burning through GEE platform: a case study of Sheikhupura district, Punjab

A recurring global phenomenon, known as environmental menace is attributed to Biomass Burning. Sheikhupura District, being the hotspot of air pollution, is under great Environmental threat due to the increasing anthropogenic activities with seasonal practice of crop residue burning. The present study aims to examine spatial and temporal trends of stubble burning events & their impact on the air quality considering the months of October, November and December, from 2020 to 2023. During these months the stubble burning process results in the excessive formation of the smog cloud cover in Punjab Region. In order to delineate the spatial context of the stubble burning episodes, MOD64A1(MODIS Burned Monthly Gridded Data) was employed. Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) was used to determine the burnt areas. High resolution Sentinel 5P with Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) was used to determine the spatio-temporal extent of the selected air pollutants (CO, SO2 & NO2). The analysis performed in the Google Earth Engine platform indicated a nearly threshold rise in crop residue burning in October & November as compared to December. Using Satellite Data, findings revealed increase in concentration of gasses in ambient air during the selected burning period. It was further concluded that smoke from Biomass burning in Punjab significantly worsened regional air quality due to its long range transport.
