Comparative Analysis of Hermetically and Conventionally Stored Paddy (Basmati-1121)

This study investigates the impact of different storage management practices on the quality and market viability of paddy grains. The research aims to identify the most effective storage solutions by analyzing the influence of climatic parameters (temperature and relative humidity) and storage parameters (moisture content, bulk density, thousand-grain weight, germination rate, insect infestation, grain damage percentage, and gas concentration) on the preservation of paddy grains.
MethodsA completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications was applied to evaluate the storage performance. Paddy grains were stored for 6 months in various types of plastic bags, including 1-layer (HDPE), 2-layer (HDPE and PP), 3-layer (2-layer HDPE and PP), jute bag, and the GrainPro cocoon bag. The study meticulously monitored temperature, relative humidity, and storage parameters across these bags to evaluate their effectiveness in preserving grain quality, focusing particularly on the role of the hermetic bag in controlling insect infestation and gas concentration.
ResultsThe cocoon bag demonstrated superior performance in maintaining stable environmental conditions, with a minimal effect on moisture content (0.50% variation), bulk density (0.01% variation), and thousand-grain weight (0.1448% change). The research highlighted the significant influence of temperature and relative humidity fluctuations on the quality of stored paddy, emphasizing the critical importance of controlling moisture desorption to minimize grain damage.
ConclusionThis study highlights the importance of implementing advanced storage solutions, such as the GrainPro cocoon bag, to enhance the sustainable preservation and marketability of paddy grains. The GrainPro cocoon bag was identified as the most effective storage solution, showing minimal variation in moisture content (0.50%), bulk density (0.01%), and grain weight (0.1448%).
