Analysis of the Insulation Condition Due To Contamination on the Surface of End-Windings in Large-Capacity High-Voltage Motor

In a weather protected (WPII) high-voltage (HV) motor stator windings, external air inflow for cooling can lead to contamination due to foreign materials such as dust, which may increase the dissipation factor and partial discharge (PD) magnitude. If a dry band forms between the contaminated areas during tracking or surface contamination on the end-winding, arcing and flashover may occur, leading to insulation failure. The influence of foreign materials such as dust on the surface of HV motor end-windings was assessed by analyzing the PD magnitude and pattern and ultraviolet (UV) camera measurements. The results indicated that the PD magnitude was critical due to contamination caused by dust ingress. Insulation diagnosis and UV tests were conducted during downtime to evaluate the insulation degradation condition of the stator winding in a large-capacity WPII HV motor (3,800 kW, 11 kV) that had been in operation for approximately 9 years. The insulation diagnosis test results showed that the alternating current and dissipation factor were in good condition, but the PD magnitude was determined to be critical. The root cause of the PD magnitude measured at 13,400 pC and deemed critical was confirmed to be contamination from dust ingress using a UV camera.
