Active-Clamp High Step-Up DC-DC Converter for Application of Portable Glow Discharge Excitation Source

In this paper, a high step-up dc-dc converter with soft-switching and low voltage stress for the application of portable glow discharge excitation source is proposed and analyzed. By integrating a step-up transformer with a soft-switching square wave generating unit as the first stage and a Cockcroft–Walton (CW) unit as the second stage, an ultra-high voltage gain isolated dc-dc converter is achieved. A recycle path is built to recycle the energy stored in the leakage inductor of the transformer and absorb the voltage spike of the primary active switch. Besides reducing the voltage stress of the active switch, it also helps to realize zero voltage switching (ZVS), which effectively reduces the turn-on loss. Furthermore, isolation between low voltage side and high voltage side is achieved by the transformer that ensuring the safety in the ultra-high voltage application. Finally, a 35 W prototype with 94.61% efficiency is built to verify the theoretical analysis, which can boost from 24 V input to 1.5 kV output to achieve ultra-high dc breakdown voltage of argon, and can sustain glow discharge voltage with 1 kV(35 mA).
