Study on the Influence of Nanofiller Additives in Enhancing Electrical Insulation Performance and Thermal Properties of Biodegradable Oils for Electrical Insulation Applications
摘要
Sufficient insulation between active components of a transformer is a must for its reliable operation. While transformer oil is a first choice for transformer insulation and cooling, its environmental issues, fire threats, and performance confines in terms of moisture handling, oxidation, and thermal management have led to the search for alternative fluids like esters or biodegradable oils. This study explores the use of Carbon Quantum Dots treated silica nano-filled biodegradable FR3 oil as an alternative insulating medium to traditional mineral oil. The dielectric properties of test fluids, including dielectric constant, volume resistivity, tan-delta, Partial Discharge Inception Voltage (PDIV) and PD characteristics, of nano-filled biodegradable oil were evaluated and compared with pure biodegradable oil. Additional tests for flash point, fire point and viscositywere conducted. The results demonstrate that the addition of 0.01 wt%, 0.05 wt%, and 0.1 wt% of nanoparticles significantly enhances the insulation performance. There is a 30% rise in PDIV values, up to 8 eightfold reduction in PD magnitude, 10–15% lesser tan delta values and 12–15% high dielectric constant values were observed in FR3 nanofluid samples when compared to samples without nano additives. Hence, the nanofluid offers significant improvements, particularly in high-stress and high-voltage applications.
