Scope of Sustainability By Using Jute Geotextile Products In Railway Geotechnical Projects

The integration of sustainable and eco-efficient materials into railway geotechnical projects has become essential in light of rising environmental concerns. Jute geotextiles (JGT), being biodegradable and locally available, offer a green alternative to synthetic geotextiles for soil reinforcement, filtration, and erosion control. This study investigates the effectiveness of nano-SiO₂-treated JGT in railway embankment applications. The novelty lies in presenting the first structured case study where nano-coating technology is applied to extend the durability and performance of JGT in real-world railway projects. The paper also evaluates the material through laboratory testing, field monitoring, and comparative life cycle analysis, thereby bridging the research gap between laboratory-scale results and practical implementation. Findings indicate that nano-treated JGT significantly improves tensile strength, reduces erosion by up to 30%, and enhances slope stability by 20% compared to untreated JGT. The case study within the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) further demonstrates improved vegetation growth and slope resilience. This work establishes Nano-modified JGT as a cost-effective, sustainable, and technically viable solution for subgrade stabilization, embankment protection, and slope management in railway infrastructure.
