Sustainable Packaging Solutions for Guava: Comparative Effects of Bagasse, Chitosan, and Polyethylene on Fruit Quality and Shelf Life

The effect of environmentally friendly packaging materials on guava (Psidium guajava L.) quality and shelf life during cold storage (7 ± 1 °C, 55 ± 5% RH) was investigated with four treatments: bagasse (T1), polyethylene-laminated bagasse (T2), chitosan-coated polyethylene (T3), and commercial polyethylene as control (T4). Fruits were tested every 4 days for physiological weight loss, chilling injury, firmness, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, and ascorbic acid content. Results showed that T2 significantly reduced weight loss (4.4%) and chilling injury (1.34%) and contained the maximum ascorbic acid content (196 mg/100 g) after 24 days. T3 also improved firmness compared to control. TSS and titratable acidity fluctuations were minimal under treatments. In general, bagasse-based biodegradable packaging was potential as an alternative green solution to plastic, but preliminary economic and feasibility analyses are required before its extensive application. This study highlights the potential of eco-friendly packaging materials to enhance fruit preservation while aligning with current sustainable packaging trends.
