Utilising Agro-waste in Textile Industry: Advancing Sustainability with a Year-Round Waste Cycle

The textile and agricultural industries are among the largest contributors to global pollution, generating significant waste and emissions. Valorizing agro-waste for textile applications presents a dual opportunity: to address sustainability challenges and to promote circular economy. This review explores the potential of agro-waste as a resource for the production of fiber, natural dyes, composites, and wastewater treatment in textiles. Additionally, applications such as antimicrobial textiles, UV protection, and organo-nano material synthesis are briefly presented. In addition to lowering the carbon footprint of the textile industry, agro-waste utilization diverts waste from landfills, increases resource efficiency, and mitigates adverse effects associated with practices like crop burning (such as reduced soil fertility and air pollution). However, challenges such as inconsistent supply must be addressed to ensure commercial viability and scalability. Agro-waste is mostly seasonal, and a particular type of raw material may not be available throughout the year. To solve this issue, this review employed a bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review (2005–2024), identified key trends, and introduced a novel agro-waste calendar (and cycle) using data from the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI). The presented approach aims to ensure year-round supply chain stability, optimize industrial processing, and minimize seasonal employment gaps.
