A Case-Based Sustainability Assessment of Tannery Sludge Management Technique: Lab to Market Perspective
摘要
In this paper, we have assessed the sustainability metrics in alignment with economic and environmental parameters of an encapsulation-based disposal method for tannery sludge emerged in a common effluent treatment plant located in Chromepet, Chennai. We evaluated current handling practices in comparison to the proposed method for tannery sludge, from the standpoint of a circularity-driven approach to developing new construction products. Eco chain Mobius, a life cycle analysis tool, was used to assess the environmental impact and cost analysis was carried out to arrive at the economic impact of the alternative tannery sludge encapsulation method. With respect to economic and environmental verticals of sustainability, the comparative results demonstrated that new business units can be developed and deployed profitably from within the existing common effluent treatment plants, by innovatively converting the industry sludge into modular cementitious capsules.
