Tribological Characteristics of P. Stocksii Bamboo Fiber Composites with Permanganization Enhancement

Natural fibers are known for their inherent limitations, including low thermal stability and hydrophilic characteristics due to the presence of hydroxyl groups in their molecular structure. However, these drawbacks can be effectively mitigated through chemical treatments. This research aims to investigate the tribological properties of bamboo fiber composites subjected to permanganate treatment, with a focus on their potential for high-friction applications in pursuit of sustainability goals. In this study, Pseudoxytenanthera stocksii (P. Stocksii) fibers were chosen due to their exceptional mechanical properties. Before making composites through hot compression molding, bamboo fibers are treated with permanganate, turned into powder, and then mixed with other ingredients to make composites suitable for friction applications. Comprehensive analyses including FTIR, XRD, and TGA along with a water immersion test were conducted to confirm the replacement of hydroxyl groups and assess changes in the crystallinity and thermal stability of the resulting composite materials. These fabricated composites are then subjected to tribological testing using a pin-on-disc tribometer. Morphological analysis along with the findings from this study reveal the promising potential of permanganated bamboo-reinforced composites in terms of their tribological performance.
