Laparoscopic-assisted resection of complicated Meckel’s diverticulum in pediatrics

Meckel’s diverticulum (MD) is a common congenital gastrointestinal tract (GIT) anomaly, its incidence is about 2–4%. It is usually asymptomatic and is accidentally discovered during laparotomy or detected with complications which mandates either diverticulectomy or segmental resection.

The aim of this study is to illustrate surgical outcomes of laparoscopic-assisted resection of MD and evaluate the feasibility of laparoscopy in MD management preserve both advantages of its procedure and decrease financial burden of stapler.

This retrospective study included 20 cases of preoperatively or intraoperatively diagnosed complicated MD for whom laparoscopy-assisted excision of MD was done in our institute and its affiliated hospital from December 2019 to December 2023.All data of our patients were recorded and illustrated.

The mean age was 7.5 years (range 2–12 years). Male-to-female ratio was 3:1. One case mandated conversion and two patient underwent wedge resection.

Laparoscopy is a necessary tool for abdominal exploration in pediatrics having abdominal pain beside being safe for management of complicated MD with less risk of both intra-abdominal contamination and expected postoperative adhesion.
