No delivery today: hashtags and strike movement on Twitter
摘要
This article analyses a food courier strike movement in Brazil that was organised through Twitter on July 1st, 2020, in Brazil. The movement called #grevedosapps fought against the ‘uberisation’ of the food delivery industry and the poor working conditions of motorcycle couriers (’Motoboys’). The research uses a mixed-methods approach (quantitative and qualitative analyses), including #grevedosapps’ co-occurring hashtags, the flow of tweets, and influential profiles over eight days to understand the discourse and organisation of the movement. The data were scraped and processed using R language scripts and a Twitter academic research account. Hashtags indexed the topics and reflected the movement’s organisation into social roles, such as activists, supporters, and outsiders expressing solidarity or trying to publicise other external causes by co-indexing them to Greve dos Apps. The profile starting the movement was most influential due to media coverage and their messages being most shared. Message flow showed strategic timing as they peaked on strike day, mostly during busy delivery hours. Retweets kept engagement during these hours. The most shared posts highlighted unfair labour conditions and called for participation. The core discussion focused on Motoboys’ wages, safety, and precarity issues. The analysis showed how mobilisation through Twitter and strategic communication promoted Motoboys’ labour rights.
