Evaluation of occupational health and process risk assessment of industrial waste incinerator

The rapid increase in population and changing socioeconomic conditions have led to a significant rise in solid waste generation. Among the various types of waste, medical and industrial waste are considered hazardous worldwide and managed through incineration. However, hazardous and industrial waste poses various risks and hazards, making a thorough risk evaluation and management at waste treatment facilities essential to protect workers’ health and safety. This study evaluates the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) risks at an industrial waste incineration facility in Kala Shah Kaku, Lahore, Pakistan, through a comprehensive Process Risk Assessment. Primary data was collected through a survey using a standardized health and safety checklist, while secondary data provided insights into the waste incineration process. Additional information on workers’ demographics, health status, and safety knowledge was gathered via a questionnaire. The health and safety performance of the facility was compared with the standards set by the International Labor Organization (ILO). The facility adheres to environmental quality standards and does not pose a significant threat to public health or the environment. However, musculoskeletal disorders remain a major concern due to the manual handling of waste, requiring additional mitigation efforts. The study identifies both current and potential risks associated with the incineration process and provides a basis for improved risk management strategies. This study is valuable in assessing worker safety behaviors, i.e., the preventive actions workers take such as PPE usage and adherence to protocols, to reduce occupational risks. It provides actionable strategies to eliminate hazards. The recommended risk management measures are applicable to other similar facilities, helping to mitigate OHS risks in the broader industries.
