Synergy Between Zinc Fertilization and Azospirillum Brasilense in Cowpea Biofortification and Yield Boost

Purpose. Zinc (Zn) deficiency in plants and humans is a widespread issue in many developing regions, directly affecting food quality and public health. This study aimed to evaluate whether the combination of foliar Zn fertilization and inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense could synergistically enhance cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) grain yield, Zn accumulation, and nutritional quality, particularly in terms of protein content (albumin, globulin, glutelin and prolamin). Methods. Two cowpea cultivars (BRS Guariba and BRS Tumucumaque) were cultivated under five Zn doses (0, 300, 600, 900, and 1200 g ha⁻¹) with or without foliar inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with three replicates per treatment. Agronomic, physiological, and nutritional parameters were assessed, including grain yield, Zn concentration in grains and leaves, and grain contents of proteins and sugars. Results. Grain yield and Zn accumulation in both leaves and grains increased significantly with foliar Zn fertilization, particularly at doses ≥ 600 g ha⁻¹. Inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense further enhanced these effects, especially in BRS Tumucumaque, which achieved the highest yield (1194.4 kg ha⁻¹) and grain Zn concentration (78.8 mg kg⁻¹). Protein fractions (albumin, globulin, glutelin, and prolamin) also increased with Zn and bacterial inoculation. In contrast, sucrose and total sugar levels remained unaffected. Conclusions. Integrating foliar Zn fertilization with Azospirillum brasilense inoculation is a promising experimental approach to sustainably enhance cowpea yield and nutritional quality, particularly protein and Zn content. This combined strategy may play a key role in addressing hidden hunger in regions affected by Zn deficiency.
