Agave Leaf Mulch as a Biological Amendment for Increased Plant Biomass and Amelioration of Acidic Soils

This study evaluated the effect of leaf mulch from young (0.5 years old) and mature (2.5 years old) Agave tequilana on wheat growth in a greenhouse environment. The main research question was whether agave leaf mulch could enhance wheat biomass, soil pH, and inorganic carbon compared to standard mulch treatments. The experiment compared plastic, sugarcane, pea straw, and agave mulches applied at 10 t ha− 1. Mulch nutrient composition was analysed. Wheat biomass, soil pH, and inorganic carbon in the topsoil layer were measured after 76 days. Agave leaf mulches contained up to 5.3% calcium, 1.5% magnesium, and 0.5% phosphorus. Wheat biomass was higher with both young and mature agave mulches compared to plastic mulch. Soil pH increased from 5.0 to 6.7 in the topsoil and in the presence of agave leaf mulch, with younger leaves causing the most pronounced change. No significant differences in soil inorganic carbon emerged among treatments. Overall, agave leaf mulch improved wheat biomass production and increased topsoil pH, highlighting its potential as an effective soil amendment for acidic conditions.
