摘要

Nanotechnology is an emerging field that involves a wide range of technological interventions in agricultural aspects under a dynamic climate. As the world population is expected to increase from the current 8.1 billion to 9.7 billion in 2050 to meet per capita food demand, a historical increase in agricultural production under harsh environmental circumstances is necessary. The agro-industry benefits greatly from the use of nanotechnology in solving a variety of issues, such as increasing crop productivity or developing plants that are resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses, such as drought, salinity, heavy metal stress, diseases, and pests. Some of the major applications of this technology in agriculture are as nanofertilizers, nanoherbicides, nanopesticides, and nanobiosensors, which increase crop yields with a healthy Agro-ecosystem under environmental adversities. Therefore, future agriculture may be built on the use of nano-enabled products in various ways. Nanoparticles hold strong potential for sustainable food production, but practical applications face technical and regulatory challenges, along with safety and environmental concerns due to their toxicity. The trade-off between benefits and risks varies by application, highlighting the need for robust regulatory frameworks and increased research funding. Policymakers should prioritise interdisciplinary research, ensure ethical and equitable access, and address long-term health and environmental sustainability. In this review, we address the need for nanotechnology to mitigate biotic and abiotic stress and underscore the importance of adopting nano-enabled strategies to achieve sustainable food production and secure global food systems in the face of climate change and a rapidly growing population, offering a promising pathway to climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture. By providing insights into nanotechnology's applications and benefits, the article helps readers understand the scope, mechanisms, and potential of nanoscience in revolutionising agriculture, thus equipping them with knowledge to address environmental adversities and adopt innovative solutions for sustainable farming.
