Calcium Dynamics in Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) Plant: from Soil to Fruit

The review paper discusses the significant impact of calcium-based mineral nutrition on strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) growth and development, the effect of foliar spraying of strawberries with calcium on their yield and quality, and the role of calcium in dry weight, chlorophyll content, and micronutrients under salt stress. This review highlights the physiological role, molecular mechanism, and gene regulation of calcium action in plants. It also discusses the calcium deficiency symptoms in strawberries, like as tip burn in leaves, blossom end rot (BER), fruit malformation, etc. Information on the proportion of minerals and antioxidant sources from integrated and organic strawberry production systems shows that various sources of Ca have different effects on plants, depending on other nutrients released by the dissociation of compounds. Thus, sufficient calcium intake has been recognized as an essential prerequisite to healthy plants. This emphasizes the central role of calcium, which is essential for maintaining structural integrity and cellular signaling for overall development, better quality fruits, and growth in plants. This review mainly discusses calcium’s primary function, physiological role, molecular mechanism, and other components used in addition to calcium in the best way to optimize the growth and development of strawberries and increase their quality.
