Nitrogen and Phosphorus Utilisation by Intercropping Narrowleaf Lupins With Cereals Under Differentiated Nitrogen Fertilization

The aim of the field research was to evaluate the content and uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as the efficiency of nitrogen use and apparent phosphorus balance in the intercropping of narrowleaf lupine with cereals at variable rates of mineral nitrogen fertilization. Field research was conducted in central Europe in 2021–2023 in a temperate climate. Two factors were analyzed: share of components in the sowing: narrowleaf lupine (NL) 120; spring barley (SB) 300; I1 - NL 30 + SB 225; I2 - NL 60 + SB 150; I3 - NL 90 + SB 75; spring triticale (ST) 450; I4 - NL 30 + ST 340; I5 - NL 60 + ST 225; I6 - NL 90 + ST 115 seeds m− 2; mineral fertilization with nitrogen 0, 20, 40, 60 kg N ha− 1. The content and uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus in the intercropping increased with an increase in the proportion of narrowleaf lupine relative to cereals. The highest nitrogen content and nitrogen and phosphorus uptake were obtained with fertilization at 40 and 60 kg N ha− 1, while phosphorus content was obtained at 60 kg N ha-1. Nitrogen use efficiency and apparent phosphorus balance were most favorable with intercropping with a predominance of legumes and fertilization at 40 and 60 kg N ha− 1. The most favorable results were obtained when narrowleaf lupine was intercropped with spring barley at seeding 60 + 150 or 90 + 75 seeds m− 2 and narrowleaf lupine with spring triticale at a sowing rate of 60 + 225 or 90 + 115 seeds m− 2 and fertilization 40 kg N ha− 1.
