Abstract <p>The objective was to evaluate the relationship between nitrogen (N) rates and sources in soil attributes and N losses, as well the crude protein concentration in the corn (<i>Zea mays</i> L.) – ryegrass (<i>Lolium multiflorum</i> L.) succession, under ammoniacal and nitric N fertilization in southern Brazil. The treatments consisted of two sources of N, calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) and urea, with four rates in ryegrass (0, 40, 80 and 160&#xa0;kg N ha<sup>−1</sup>) and in corn (0, 80, 160 and 240&#xa0;kg N ha<sup>−1</sup>), both applied to broadcast. The following analyzes were carried out, ammonia volatilization (NH<sub>3</sub>-N), soil mineral N, active soil acidity, dry matter and grain yield and crude protein concentration. The use of CAN showed around a 67% reduction in NH<sub>3</sub>-N compared to urea, as well as a higher tendency for soil mineral N concentration. Ryegrass dry matter yield and corn grain yield increased by around 10% with the use of CAN. A higher crude protein concentration was observed in corn grains with the use of CAN compared to urea.&#xa0;The NH<sub>3</sub> emission reduce with the use of CAN, with higher availability of mineral N in the soil and corn grain yield. The CAN increase the dry matter yield of ryegrass compared to the use of common urea. The crude protein concentration of corn grains increases with the use of CAN.</p>
