<p>Pulse beetles (<i>Callosobruchus</i> spp.) are among the most destructive pests of stored legumes, causing substantial quantitative and qualitative losses during storage. Information on the distribution, host preference and demographic performance of different <i>Callosobruchus</i> species is essential for understanding their pest status and developing effective management strategies. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the distribution of <i>Callosobruchus</i> species in major pulse-growing districts of Himachal Pradesh, evaluate the orientation behaviour of adults towards different pulse hosts, and compare the demographic performance of <i>C. chinensis</i>, <i>C. maculatus</i> and <i>C. analis</i> using female age-specific life-table analysis. Field surveys conducted during 2022–2024 revealed that <i>C. chinensis</i> was the most widely distributed species, followed by <i>C. maculatus</i>, whereas <i>C. analis</i> exhibited a comparatively restricted distribution. Free-choice orientation assays demonstrated distinct interspecific differences in host preference, with <i>C. chinensis</i> showing maximum attraction towards mung bean, <i>C. maculatus</i> towards kabuli chickpea, and <i>C. analis</i> towards chickpea and cowpea. Comparative life-table analyses further indicated marked variation in demographic performance among pulse hosts. Mung bean supported the highest reproductive potential and population growth of <i>C. chinensis</i>, whereas chickpea and kabuli chickpea were the most favourable hosts for <i>C. maculatus</i>, and horse gram and cowpea supported superior demographic performance of <i>C. analis</i>. Rajma consistently proved to be the least suitable host for all three species. By integrating species distribution, host orientation behaviour and comparative demographic performance within a single investigation, this study provides a broader ecological understanding of host utilization by economically important <i>Callosobruchus</i> species under stored-grain conditions. The findings provide an integrated understanding of species distribution, host orientation and demographic performance, thereby generating information useful for host-based pest risk assessment and the development of integrated management strategies for stored pulses.</p>
