Gynaikothrips uzeli (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae): An emerging threat to Syzygium guineense (Willed.) DC. in Ethiopia

A survey was conducted in central Ethiopia during the spring season (March–April 2025) to assess emerging insect pests on Syzygium guineense trees. Severe insect gall infestations were observed, characterized by leaf curling and gall formation on stems and branches. Samples of infested leaves and branches were collected, dissected and morphologically examined. The results indicated that galls are induced by insect larvae and adults that feed on leaves, stems, and branches, causing the leaves to fold and the stems and branches to abnormally enlarge, resulting in galls of various sizes. A study of gall samples and identification of associated insect species was conducted using morphological characterization under a stereo microscope. Based on the results, the gall-inducing insect was identified as Gynaikothrips uzeli. The findings indicate that G. uzeli has successfully adapted to this new host, causing severe damage in Ethiopia. Close monitoring is essential for implementing appropriate interventions. Clinical trial numbet: not applicable.
