Enchanting mantids of Tamil Nadu: a morphological odyssey through Hierodula (Mantodea: Mantidae) species

Four species of praying mantids, the genus Hierodula, namely H. doveri, H. membranacea, H. patellifera, and, H. tenuidentata, belonging to the subfamily Hierodulinae from Tamil Nadu have been revised, with a detailed examination of their morphological and genital characteristics. Notably, Hierodula tenuidentata has been recorded for the first time in Tamil Nadu, significantly extending its known geographical range. The identification key for the Hierodula species also has been provided to facilitate the accurate identification. Consequently, current checklist of Hierodula species of Tamil Nadu has been updated to 8 species, reflecting the diverse mantid fauna of the region.
