Fatty acid and vitamin B complex composition in three edible insects consumed by the tribes of Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, India

Nestled in the northeastern state of India, Arunachal Pradesh is known for its rich biodiversity and is home to a long-standing tradition of entomophagy among its tribal communities. This study is based on profiling the fatty acid and vitamin B complexes of three edible insect species: the velvety tree ant (Liometopum lindgreeni), the stink bug (Coridius janus), and the Taro borer beetle (Aplosonyx chalybaeus), which are commonly consumed in this region, particularly in the Upper Siang district. The analysis revealed that the Liometopum lindgreeni had the highest total lipid content (365 ± 5.72 mg/g) among the three studied insects. The fatty acid profile of these insects is characterized by high monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) contents, with oleic acid (C18:1n-9c) being the dominant fatty acid across all species. The main implication of these findings is a clear nutritional distinction: Aplosonyx chalybaeus presented the best fatty acid profile, characterized by the highest unsaturated fat content (including 57.00 ± 1.68% oleic acid and 8.36 ± 1.11% linoleic acid), while the Liometopum lindgreeni offered the superior vitamin profile. Vitamin B complex analysis revealed the L. lindgreeni is an excellent source of essential vitamins B5 (26.23 ± 1.52 mg/g), B2, and B3, and was the only species found to contain vitamin B1, among the studied edible insects. This variability highlights their specific potential as valuable sources of essential nutrients, emphasizing their role as sustainable and nutritional food sources.
