Baseline toxicity and ovicidal action of different insecticides against invasive insect pest fall armyworm, Spodoptera Frugiperda (J.E. Smith) in India

Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda, J.E. Smith) is recent invasive pest into India which is known to cause significant damage to maize and other crops worldwide. Targeting eggs of this pest through effective ovicidal insecticides shall have added advantage and it’s a new thought process in management. In this study six insecticides have been subjected for larval baseline toxicity and ovicidal efficacy assays. Third instar larvae were treated topically to determine LC₅₀ and LC₉₅ values using probit analysis, while egg masses of 1 to 3 days aged were tested at recommended and half recommended doses. Chlorantraniliprole appeared to be most toxic to larvae, with LC₅₀ of 0.17 ppm (24 h), 0.14 ppm (48 h) and 0.08 ppm (72 h). Emamectin benzoate and flubendiamide were next in the orderwhile Fipronil and azadirachtin were least toxic. Thiodicarb 75 WP rendered highest egg mortality ( 82.8% at the recommended dose), followed by Spinetoram 11.7 SC. As the eggs get olders ovicidal action was stricking. Mortality was consistently higher at the recommended dose than at half dose. These results demonstrate that chlorantraniliprole and thiodicarb are the most promising larvicidal and ovicidal options, respectively, for managing S. frugiperda. This baseline toxicity data will support resistance monitoring and guide the selection of insecticides for Integrated Pest Management of fall armyworm in maize or any other crop in India.
