<p>The control of insect pests through biorational methods has been seen as the cornerstone of sustainable agriculture. Although most insect pest species are still controlled with synthetic insecticides worldwide, the increasing public concern about the use of these products makes farmers frequently seek alternative methods to control pests. In this review, we focus on the use of capsaicinoids, i.e., a phytochemical group of nonvolatile alkaloid compounds that are mainly present in plants of the <i>Capsicum</i> genus, as insecticides against agricultural pests. In a period of 45&#xa0;years, 103 scientific papers dealing with the use of capsaicin for insect pest control were published. Of these studies, 24% were carried out on species of the order Coleoptera, 13% Hemiptera, and 11% Homoptera, among others. Species in the family Aphididae were the most studied. Judging from the number of publications, our study reveals that capsaicinoids have been underutilized against insect pests. Moreover, most studies (&gt; 85%) have been conducted under laboratory conditions rather than in the field where compounds have to interact with environmental variables to draw valid conclusions. Our findings also show that the effectiveness of capsaicinoids to control insect pests is limited, and the best results were achieved in the field when they were combined with other insecticides (synergist effect). Given the ecological advantages of capsaicinoids, more trials against specific pests are needed to use it as an alternative insecticide and reduce the synthetic insecticide dependence.</p>
