Influence of calcium silicate and potassium silicate on life-table of Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) on Phaseolus vulgaris

Plant fortification can enhance resistance to pests, and certain fertilizers can reduce pest populations by influencing biological parameters of pests. Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) is a significant pest of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). A laboratory study was conducted to assess the developmental and reproductive performance of two-spotted spider mite (TSSM) on bean plants treated with potassium silicate, calcium silicate, and control. Biological parameters were recorded across treatments by monitoring individual F2 generation mites from egg to adult. Also, the effect of calcium silicate, potassium silicate, and control treatment on SPAD index after 5, 10, and 15 days using a chlorophyll meter was evaluated. Results revealed that both silicates significantly reduced the lifespan of the mites. Developmental time decreased to 25.00 ± 0.71 days with potassium silicate and 22.61 ± 0.49 days with calcium silicate, compared to 27.19 ± 0.64 days in the control. Similarly, oviposition periods were shortened to 16.56 ± 0.40 days (potassium silicate) and 14.58 ± 0.41 days (calcium silicate), versus 19.30 ± 0.45 days in the control. Population parameters, including net reproduction rate (R0) declined from 29.40 ± 3.29 (control) to 20.62 ± 2.59 (potassium silicate) and 15.92 ± 2.11 (calcium silicate). Intrinsic rate of increase (r) declined in control, potassium silicate and calcium silicate from 0.222 ± 0.009 to 0.198 ± 0.010 and 0.189 ± 0.010, respectively. Adult longevity also decreased. The SPAD chlorophyll index showed that the highest index was obtained in the calcium silicate treatment. These findings suggest that calcium silicate and potassium silicate could play positively influencing the chlorophyll index and managing TSSM populations in integrated pest management program.
