Plant traits influence performance of thrips, Megalurothrips distalis Karny on selected greengram accessions

Greengram is one of the most widely grown pulses, and its productivity is often hampered by several pests, particularly thrips (Megalurothrips distalis Karny). Exploration and exploitation of insect resistant traits among the gene pool of greengram is an important eco-friendly component to manage this pest. Many studies conducted earlier focused solely on field screening of greengram genotypes for thrips resistance rather than analyzing the mechanisms of resistance and also thrips-resistant varieties are not available. Therefore, the antixenosis and antibiosis mechanisms of resistance to M. distalis in selected greengram accessions was evaluated under no-choice and free-choice conditions at the Host Plant Resistance Laboratory, Department of Entomology, Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu, India. Four promising accessions were selected and feeding and oviposition preferences of M. distalis towards terminal leaves and flowers were evaluated in comparison with a susceptible accession. Feeding preference of thrips towards terminal leaves of the accession IC-329039-1, followed by the accession IC-325,782 was the least both under free choice and no choice conditions. M. distalis population reared on flowers of the accession IC-329039-1 showed significantly slower development, shorter lifespan and lower survival and fecundity rate (20.43) than the other four accessions. These findings indicate that the performance of thrips populations varied among the selected accessions and is influenced by various biophysical and biochemical factors of the respective accessions. The promising accessions such as IC-329039-1 and IC-325,782 may be useful in to developing thrips resistant / tolerant genotypes.
