Insecticides in maize seed treatment against Dalbulus Maidis (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae): greenhouse and field assessments

The corn leafhopper Dalbulus maidis (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) is the vector for the corn stunting pathogens, which are responsible for significant yield losses over the past few years in most of the maize producing regions in Brazil. Greater populations of this insect have been reported, which have been demanding more attention and coexistence with this problem by the grower. To provide useful information for D. maidis management, the efficacy of different insecticides for seed treatment was evaluated in the greenhouse and field for D. maidis control and stunt disease prevention. The insecticides imidacloprid + thiodicarb, imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiametoxam were evaluated, all at the maximum concentration recommended for D. maidis management. In the greenhouse, maize seeds were sown in plastic pots (five pots per treatment) and each plant was infested with 10 adult leafhoppers at 3, 7, 15 and 20 days after plant emergence (DAE). Mortality was assessed at 24 and 48 h after infestation. In field trials, at first and second crop season under natural infestation, maize was sowed in experimental plots (five plots per treatment) and the number of leafhoppers per plant was assessed at 3, 7, 10, 15 and 20 DAE. At 90 DAE, the incidence of maize bush stunt (MBS) and maize rayado fino (MRF) diseases was evaluated, and yield was recorded at maturation. Imidacloprid + thiodicarb and imidacloprid were the most effective in greenhouse, with satisfactory control up to 7 DAE. In field, imidacloprid + thiodicarb reduced D. maidis population at second crop season up to 15 DAE. The tested insecticides in seed treatment, as single practice, did not reduce the incidence of MBS and MRF diseases, nor caused yield benefits.
