Evaluation of insecticidal effect of four plant oils against banana leaf and fruit scarring beetle, Basilepta subcostatum (Jacoby) (Chrysomelidae: Coleoptera) under laboratory conditions

Considering the importance of botanical alternatives to synthetic chemical insecticides, the present experiment was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the four plant oils viz., neem, castor, pongamia and jatropha seed oils against banana leaf and fruit scarring beetle, Basilepta subcostatum. The efficacy of the plant oils were evaluated on the basis of LC50 values at five different concentrations (0.25, 0.50, 1.0, 1.50 and 3.0%) along with a control (soap solution). Castor seed oil that caused 90% mortality was found to be the most effective followed by neem, pongamia and jatropha seed oil with 62.50, 58.75 and 46.25% mortality, respectively at 72 h after exposure to the treated leaf. The levels of toxicity were determined based on probit analysis where the lowest LC50 (0.404%) was recorded in castor seed oil followed by neem oil (1.864%), pongamia oi (2.201%) and jatropha oil (5.141%). Similarly, the lowest LT50 value was also recorded in castor seed oil (14.530 h) followed by neem (43.287 h), pongamia oil (55.224 h) and jatropha oil (67.969 h) at 3.0% concentration. The findings clearly highlighted that among the four different plant seed oils tested, castor seed oil exhibited the highest insecticidal potential against adult B. subcostatum, indicating its potential as a viable botanical alternative for inclusion in organic pest management strategies in banana cultivation.
