<p><i>Tetrapleura tetraptera</i> is a well-known tree species with several nutritional, health and household benefits. Recent reports indicate that <i>T. tetraptera</i> suffers from pest infestation which affects tree growth and fruit productivity. The study was conducted to assess the prevalence of dieback and mortality of <i>T. tetraptera</i> in monoculture and mixed stand, and determine the influence of tree age, growth and ecological zone on dieback and tree mortality. Using 25&#xa0;m x 25&#xa0;m sampling plots, with three replications in <i>T. tetraptera</i> plantations at age 4, 8, 9, 11, 12 and 15 years, we found that dieback occurred in all <i>T. tetraptera</i> plantations irrespective of the stand age. However, the oldest (15 years) <i>T. tetraptera</i> stand suffered the highest mortality (87.7%) and no mortality was observed in the youngest (4 years) plantation. Additionally, pest infestation was higher in the monoculture (97.4%) relative to the mixed plantation (93.2%) but tree mortality was significantly less (17.8%) in mixed plantation than monoculture (43.5%). This suggest that an integrated pest management strategy combining eco-friendly pest control methods and mixed plantations could mitigate tree mortality caused by the insect pest thwarting the efforts to domesticate <i>T. tetraptera.</i></p>
