Impact of abiotic factors on different developmental stages of Antheraea proylei (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) reared on Quercus floribunda and Q. glauca

The oak tasar silkworm, Antheraea proylei (Jolly) (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae), is an oligophagous species found in the regions of the Sub-Himalayan belt. A. proylei plays a significant role in abiotic balance and sericulture due to its specialized silk production. This study investigates the impact of temperature and relative humidity on the growth and developmental parameters of A. proylei. The experiment utilized two different diet plants, Quercus floribunda (Diet 1) and Q. glauca (Diet 2). Six different treatments, varying in temperature (18 °C to 32 °C) and relative humidity (65% to 80%), were tested using a growth chamber. Key findings revealed that the shortest developmental duration (26–36 days) and the highest larval survival rate occurred at temperatures between 22 °C to 28 °C, with relative humidity (RH) of 70–78%. Significant correlations were observed between the larval instars and overall survivability. The prevalence of infections and developmental abnormalities was inversely related to optimal environmental conditions with higher survival rates (over 80%) observed in favorable treatments. This research determines the controlled temperature and relative humidity for enhancing A. proylei productivity and silk quality, highlighting the importance of precise environmental control in sericulture.
