A new species of Neanastatus (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Neanastatidae) from Uttarakhand, associated with stem galls of Indigofera heterantha Mill

Neanastatus indigoferum sp. nov. (Hymenoptera: Neanastatidae) is described as a new parasitoid wasp species from Uttarakhand, India, reared from a Cecidomyiid (gall midge) that induces twig galls on Indigofera heterantha. This species is readily distinguished from all other Oriental congeners by its uniformly yellowish brown, non-metallic body; a dark blackish brown gaster with a single, prominent basal yellowish band; an antenna with pedicel, first funicular segment (F1) and funicular segment 2 (F2) subequal in length and width; a mid tibial spur shorter than combined length of the basal three tarsal segments; and a pronotum distinctly shorter than the mesoscutum. Comprehensive taxonomic assessment, including detailed morphological comparisons and rearing data, supports the recognition of this species as new to entomological science. This finding enhances our understanding of host-parasitoid dynamics and Chalcidoidea (Neanastatidae) diversity in the Indian subcontinent. The study also documents a tritrophic interaction involving a medicinal shrub, its gall-inducing insect, and a natural parasitoid. By expanding knowledge of Neanastatidae diversity and host relationships within Cecidomyiidae, this work underscores the ecological significance of Chalcidoidea as potential agents of biological control. Additionally an updated identification key to related Indian Neanastatus species is provided to facilitate more accurate identification and comparative studies within this group.
