摘要

The lac insect (Kerria lacca Kerr) is a valuable source of natural lac resin, playing a significant role in supporting the livelihoods of farmers who rely on forest resources. Butea monosperma Lam. (Taub.), commonly known as Palas, serves as a primary host plant for rangeeni strain of Indian lac insect cultivation. As a phloem sap feeder, the lac insect imposes stress on the host plant, initiating various biochemical and physiological responses to adapt to this stress. This study aimed to investigate the key biochemical changes in the Palas tree during different stages of the summer crop of rangeeni strain of lac insect life cycle. The results showed that the lowest levels of total sugar, soluble protein, and free phenol occurred after the mating stage (post-fertilization) of the lac insect. The total chlorophyll and carotenoid content was highest at maturation stage as compared to the other stages. This suggests that the post-mating period is a critical phase for lac insect development, characterized by a sharp demand for phloem sap from the lac insect as well as host plant.
