<p>A new species under the genus <i>Hemerodromia</i> is described based on a pupa accidentally reared in association with an empty blackfly cocoon, from which a male specimen emerged. This represents the first Neotropical Hemerodromiinae described based on the pupal exuviae and the corresponding reared adult. <i>Hemerodromia mystica</i> sp. nov. is the third species of the genus described for the Atlantic Forest of the State of Rio de Janeiro, highlighting significant sampling gaps in this biome, particularly in plateau regions such as rocky and high-altitude fields. These areas are recognized as centers of endemism for aquatic insects in the highlands of Southeast Brazil. Empididae is related to studies on bioindicators of water quality, with occurrence records used in the scoring of environmental integrity indices. Like <i>Hemerodromia mystica</i> sp. nov., many <i>Hemerodromia</i> species described from Brazil have their type localities within conservation units of distinct biomes, emphasizing the need to investigate this group further in studies on environmental quality.</p>
