摘要

Despite the ecological and economic significance of Odontotermes Holmgren, the studies on taxonomy and distribution are meagre in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. The genus Odontotermes contains many of the pest species which destroys wood, structures, agricultural and horticultural crops. However, the ecosystem services provided by the genera are not estimated. As a part of taxonomic study of Termites of South India, four species of Odontotermes termites were collected viz., Odontotermes escherichi (Holmgren), O. globicola (Wasmann), O. gurdaspurensis Holmgren and Holmgren and O. vaishno Bose and identified as new records to Andhra Pradesh. These four species were earlier recorded in the adjacent states and are now having an expanded range to Andhra Pradesh. The species were identified based on the morphological characteristics of soldier caste. The characteristic diagnostic features of the species were provided along with an updated check list of presently known species of termites from Andhra Pradesh. As the genus contains major pest species, the new records have both ecological and economic significance for the region.
