Unlocking the potentials of the discarded: suitability of common food and fruit wastes in Ilorin metropolis for rearing black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens L. larvae

The black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens L. is a non-vector insect whose larva has the potential to convert organic wastes streams into quality protein biomass. High-quality black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) offer livestock farmers an opportunity to reduce production costs and earn more. However, all organic wastes are not equal in economic value or their suitability as BSFL rearing substrates. To ensure sustainable commercial BSFL production in Nigeria, rearing must be done using cheap, accessible and suitable organic wastes. Consequently, this study investigated the suitability of common restaurant food wastes (leftover cooked staples) and market fruit wastes (orange, watermelon and pineapple fruit peels) in Ilorin, Nigeria for BSFL rearing. Six-day-old-larvae (6-DOL) were reared on mashed-pulps of both wastes and their performance (survival and growth) at 11-, 15- and 19-DOL was determined in an experiment with chicken feed as control treatment substrate. Survival of 11-, 15- and 19-DOL on food wastes (97.50%, 80.0% and 67.50%) was comparable with the control (93.75%, 82.5% and 68.75%) but significantly better than on fruit waste (85.63%, 57.5% and 36.35%). Furthermore, 15-DOL on food wastes had significantly higher average weight per larvae (0.44 mg), body length (20.15 mm) and width (5.85 mm) than those reared on fruit wastes (0.16 mg, 17.80 mm and 4.55 mm) or the control (0.24 mg, 19.35 mm and 5.20 mm), respectively. Nevertheless, crude protein content of 15- and 19-DOL reared on fruit wastes (47.23 and 46.60%) and food wastes (43.02 and 45.42%), respectively were comparable to those of soybean meal (44–46%)– a major livestock feed ingredient in the study area.
