Field efficacy of insecticides for the control of pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Sounders) in transgenic Bt cotton

Cotton pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is a destructive insect pest causes substantial monetary loss to Bt cotton growers. Managing this pest effectively under field condition proves challenging, as it resides and feeds inside the cotton boll. Insecticides have been primarily used to control pink bollworm but comparative efficacy of insecticides in sequence with different modes of action against pink bollworm in Bt cotton production systems are limited. However, timely insecticide application and sequential sprays with different modes of action are required for its effective control. Therefore, in this experiment, the sequential sprays of insecticides viz., T1 (1st spray-deltamethrin 2.8 EC, 2nd spray- spinosad 45 SC, 3rd spray- chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC), T2 (1st spray- cypermethrin 25 EC, 2nd spray- emamectin benzoate 5 SG and 3rd spray-flubendamide 20 WG), T3 (1st spray- indoxacarb 14.5 SC, 2nd spray- profenophos 50 EC, and 3rd spray- alpha cypermethrin 10 EC), T4 (1st spray- cyantraniliprole 10.26 OD, 2nd spray- fenvalerate 20 EC and 3rd spray- spinetoram 11.7 SC) and combination insecticide treatment T5 (1st spray- profenophos 40 EC + cypermethrin 4 EC, 2nd spray- deltamethrin 1 EC + triazophos 35 EC and 3rd spray - chlorpyriphos 50 EC + cypermethrin 5% EC) were evaluated to manage P. gossypiella in Bt cotton under irrigated conditions. The research results showed that treatment T1 (deltamethrin 2.8 EC, spinosad 45 SC, and chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC) and T3 (indoxacarb 14.5 SC, profenophos 50 EC, and alpha cypermethrin 10 EC) found effective and recorded the minimum square damage (4.16% and 4.42%). Lesser rosette flower damage was registered in T3 (3.06%), T5 (3.47%) and T1(3.61%) treatments. Green boll damage was minimum in treatments T3 (8.10%), T5 (8.35%) and T1 (8.76%) and they are superior to rest of the treatments. The lowest open boll and locule damage recorded in T3 (17.82% and 10.94%) and T1 (18.85% and 10.82%). Furthermore, T3, T5, and T1 recorded the maximum seed cotton yield (2735.58, 2542.16 and 2520.50 kg/ha) and higher ICBR noted in T3 (1:12.33) and T5 (1:10.93), respectively. Incorporation of sequential application of these insecticides proved to be effective for control of pink bollworm in Bt cotton under field conditions.
