Insecticidal activity of botanical insecticide, oxymatrine against Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae)

Housefly causes a variety of health problems in humans and animals. So, the control of housefly larvae and adults are one of the best ways to avoid health problems arising from diseases transmitted by this vector. The current investigation aimed to assess the efficacy of oxymatrine on Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae) larvae and adults. Commercial formulation of oxymatrine, Kingbo (0.6%) was mixed with food-media for third instar larvae and sugar solution for adults feeding at different concentrations. The complete larval mortality was obtained by 2.5 mg/kg after 72 h of exposure (LC50 = 0.40 mg/kg) that induced full suppression of pupation, adult emergence and survival. As well as the complete adult mortality was observed at 5.0, 2.5, 1.25 and 0.6 mg/L within 10 min, 1 h, 12 h and 24 h of treatment (LC50 = 1.3, 0.5, 0.07, 0.03 and 0.010 mg/L), respectively. The slope values indicate its higher toxicity. So that, oxymatrine can be a potential component in IPM program for the tested insect.
