Comparative bio-efficacy of Allyl Isothiocyanate and Brown Mustard Oil against Polyphagous Insect pests Aulacophora foveicollis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Mustard contains glucosinolates which are responsible for deterring the agriculturally important insect pests. The present investigation deals in determining bio-efficacy potential of mustard seed extracts and purified compound, allyl isothiocyanate (a breakdown product of glucosinolate) against adult Aulacophora foveicollis and larvae of Spodoptera litura under laboratory conditions. The Lagenaria sicereria and Ricinus communis leaves were fed to red pumpkin beetle and tobacco cut worm, respectively in anti-feeding and insecticidal experiments. The anti-feeding effect was assessed with allyl isothiocyanate ranging from concentrations of 2000–4500 ppm and insecticidal activity of allyl isothiocyanate was assessed with its concentration ranging from 4500 to 7000 ppm against both insect pests. The anti-feeding effect of brown mustard oil was assessed with concentrations ranging from 50 to 250 parts per million (ppm) and insecticidal potential of brown mustard oil was assessed with its concentration ranging from 350 to 850 ppm. The allyl isothiocyanate possessed higher bio-efficacy potential than brown mustard oil but the anti-feeding and insecticidal effects of brown mustard oil were also noteworthy. The allyl isothiocyanate possessed anti-feeding activity of range 80.30-91.09% and 76.39–89.21% against red pumpkin beetle and tobacco cutworm, respectively. The insecticidal activity parameters of allyl isothiocyanate were reflected in Lethal Time 50 (LT50) of 6.07 h (hrs) and Lethal Concentration 50 (LC50) of 5100 ppm against red pumpkin beetle and the LT50 of (5.73 h) and LC50 of (5004 ppm) against tobacco cutworm. The brown mustard oil possessed anti-feeding activity of range 60.23–77.33% against red pumpkin beetle and 56.11–70.41% against tobacco cutworm. In contrast, it possessed insecticidal activity with LT50 of 12.63 h (hrs) and LC50 of 577.76 ppm against red pumpkin beetle and the LT50 of 10.28 h and LC50 of 477.06 ppm against tobacco cutworm. Since brown mustard oil is economical to extract in comparison to purified allyl isothiocyanate, brown mustard oil becomes a more considerable bioactive agent in warding off the insect pests in near future.
