Efficacy of selected insecticides on Planococcus ficus and side effects on its natural enemies Leptomastix dactylopii and Cryptolaemus montrouzieri

The mealybug Planococcus ficus, is a major pest of vineyards worldwide, causing significant damage to grapevines by feeding on sap and transmitting plant viruses. In integrated pest management programs, the use of insecticides must be carefully implemented to target the pest while minimizing side effects on natural enemies, such as parasitoids and predators. In this context, we assessed, under laboratory conditions, the efficacy of four insecticides frequently used in Tunisian vineyards to control Planoccus ficus which are disodium tetraborate, spirotetramat, dimethoate and chlorpyriphos-ethyl and their lethal and sublethal side effects on its natural enemies Leptomastix dactylopii and Cryptolaemus montrouzieri. We found that dimethoate, chlorpyrifos-ethyl, and spirotetramat were highly effective against the first, second, and third larval instars of P. ficus, causing up to 100% mortality after 48 h post-treatment. Disodium tetraborate had a very reduced efficacy against adults with mortality rate not exceeding 8% while spirotetramat caused mortality rate of 46%. Dimethoate and chlorpyriphos-ethyl, were the most efficient against adults with 85% mortality.
The assessment of lethal and sublethal side effects of insecticides against L. dactylopii and C. montrouzieri revealed that dimethoate and chlorpyriphos-ethyl are highly toxic and alter the fecundity, the fertility and the survival of the predator. Conversely, spirotetramat and disodium tetraborate showed low adverse effects on L. dactylopii and C. montrouzieri and can be therefore used in integrated pest management programs against P. ficus in Tunisian vineyards.
