<p>Gamification and serious gamings are becoming increasingly popular as innovative, participatory teaching and learning formats in many fields. Escape games are one of them. Based on findings from the project <i>Unlock Europe—The Escape Game for Peace and Security in Europe</i>, this article examines the opportunities and challenges of escape games for peace research and peace education. The article is based on an evaluation of escape games in schools in Hamburg, from which first conclusions can be drawn. Escape games can be used as playful door openers for complex or controversial topics, and especially for the exchange of knowledge with young people. In addition to disseminating knowledge, they also raise awareness for the importance of cooperation and compromise. At the same time, participatory formats such as escape games also offer peace and conflict research insights from otherwise often neglected sources of experience and knowledge, in this case young people’s understanding of peace and security. The article concludes that peace and conflict research should better understand and use this potential.</p>
