In-vitro and in-vivo efficacy of Beltrania rhombica and Cylindrocarpon aquaticum against Xanthomonas oryzae

Aquatic hyphomycetes, a group of non-zoosporic fungi are considered to be the potential source of secondary metabolites which are active against pathogenic bacteria and fungi. The interaction of these fungi with other microorganisms in any water body results in the release of diffusible inhibitory substances in the environment. Two aquatic hyphomycetes viz., Beltrania rhombica and Cylindrocarpon aquaticum were screened for their antibacterial activity against Xanthomonas oryzae, using in-vitro methods (fungal disc and fungal extract) and in-vivo methods (pot-experiments). The zone of inhibition (ZOI) of X. oryzae was 33 mm and 30 mm by using fungal discs of C. aquaticum and B. rhombica respectively. While using fungal extracts the ZOI of X. oryzae by C. aquaticum and B. rhombica was 23 mm and 21 mm respectively. For in-vivo experiments, the infected paddy seedlings when treated with C. aquaticum and B. rhombica showed minimal blight symptoms and a significant increment in all the observed growth parameters as compared to that of control. Interestingly, both the selected aquatic hyphomycetes showed remarkable activity against X. oryzae and notably C. aquaticum is more effective than B. rhombica. These results suggest the potential use of aquatic hyphomycetes in agriculture as biofertilizers and biocontrol agents.
