Diversity analysis and cytotoxic potential of endophytic fungi associated with Cyclea peltata (Burm.f.) Hook.f. & Thomson

Members of the Menispermaceae family are well-known for their use in folk medicine to cure various diseases. They are rich sources of alkaloids and other secondary metabolites with potent biological activities. Secondary metabolites with anticancer potential have been reported to be produced by various fungal endophytes. Hence, endophytic fungi can be used as an alternate source of chemotherapeutic agents in cancer therapy. In the present study, endophytic fungi from Cyclea peltata were isolated and evaluated for their cytotoxic activity using Allium cepa and the MTT assay. The studies on the culture filtrate of isolated endophytic fungi revealed their cytotoxic potential, inducing various types of mitotic aberrations and reduced mitotic index. MTT assay of culture filtrate of endophytic fungal isolates Diaporthe phaseolorum (EF128) and Xylaria cubensis (EF139) exhibited cytotoxic activity against the human ovarian cancer cell line (SKOV-3) with LC50 values of 197.66 µg/ml and 216.69 µg/ml, respectively. These results show the cytotoxic potential of these endophytic fungal isolates and offer further investigation and exploitation as potential candidates in anticancer drug development.
