Synergistic antifungal activity of Curcuma longa rhizome and Citrus sinensis peel extracts against Aspergillus strains

This study investigates the antifungal efficacy of turmeric (Curcuma longa) rhizome extract and orange peel (Citrus sinensis) extract, both individually and in combination, against three Aspergillus species: A. fumigatus, A. niger, and A. nidulans. The antifungal activity was assessed using a disc diffusion method, and the results of individual crude extracts were compared with a positive control, Amphotericin-B and a negative control, Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). With the rise of antimicrobial resistance and concerns over the side effects and environmental impact of synthetic antifungal agents, there is an increasing need for natural alternatives. Plant-based extracts, such as those from turmeric and orange peel, offer a sustainable, eco-friendly approach to combating fungal pathogens. This study highlights the potential of these extracts as effective antifungal agents and suggests that their combination could be a promising alternative in controlling fungal infections caused by Aspergillus species.
